Typically a trainee consultant should realistically aim to become a full consultant within 6 months and become a senior consultant within 12 – 24 months. Longer term your aim will switch toward a team leader, team manager or divisional management position.

In a nutshell, recruitment consultants aim to win business from clients and then match applicants with these clients’ vacancies. Upon successful placement, the client would then be charged for services provided. The sense of satisfaction from placing a candidate in a role can be significant.
In order to be successful in this sector you must have ambition and confidence combined with tenacity and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be working to pre-set targets, both financial and effort based and you must be driven to achieve these consistently, ideally aiming to exceed them. You must be able to handle the pressure that comes with a target orientated and sales driven role such as this.
This is not a job where you can wait for the business to come in to you. Instead you have to actively go and find the business, find the candidates and make things happen for yourself. The right attitude is paramount to success and without it you will not succeed.
